What is the Intensive Advanced Legal English Program?

This intensive program at York University’s English Language Institute is designed to provide you with the legal terminology, language and writing skills you need to succeed in legal graduate studies at York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School or other Canadian law schools, and ultimately, pursue a legal professional career in Canada. All classes are led by our expert English Language Institute instructors, with regular feedback on legal topics from both law instructors and guest speakers.

What you will learn

We will help you develop your English language reading, writing and verbal skills so you can pursue your legal studies in Canada with confidence. Throughout the program you will:

  • Improve your IELTS or equivalent language score
  • Study the language of the law in a small group of peers
  • Enhance the grammar and structure of your writing
  • Work with legal terminology and documents necessary for successful Masters of Law (LLM) study
  • Develop and practice your professional speaking and presentation skills
Program Benefits

This program is currently online with dynamic, live components. You will learn in small online classes with other international students pursuing their legal studies in Canada. From day one, you will join a supportive community of learners with whom you will be able to practice your language skills and form professional relationships.

Full-time Schedule:

Class hours per week: 20

  • 4 hours per day, 5 days a week
Part-time Schedule:

Program length: 12 weeks
Online class size: Maximum 18 students
Online class hours: 8-12

  • Mondays and Wednesdays 6:00 PM- 10:00 PM
  • Thursdays: 6 PM – 10 PM

Who should take this program?

This program is primarily designed for graduates of law degree programs from outside Canada who are interested in pursuing graduate legal studies in English, pursuing accreditation to practice law in Canada, or seeking employment in the legal field in Canada.

Language Proficiency: 6.5 IELTS or equivalent test score
Previous Education: Graduation from a law degree program outside Canada

Online Delivery

Our new online program delivery, with expert instructors and best teaching practices and materials, continues to provide Canada’s most comprehensive graduate school preparation from the comfort of your own home.

Materials

You will need a computer with reliable, high-speed internet and a camera and microphone. An e-mail account, internet library access, and textbooks are included in the tuition fee.

Class schedule
  • Online: Twelve weeks, four hours of class per day, 6:00 pm–10:00 pm, Mondays and Wednesdays, plus a number of Thursdays determined by course.
  • Full-Time: Four hours of class per day, five days a week.
  • Part Time: Fourteen hours of instruction per week from 6:30 pm–9:30 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays, plus a number of Saturdays determined by course. Eight hours a week of self-paced online study.

The University Life program provides a range of co-curricular activities including:

  • Online workshops on university life skills, including topics such as time management skills, applying for admission, and testing strategies
