COVID-19 Updates and changes to program delivery. More information >
Today’s digital environments are highly complex. They are also an integral part of our daily lives. Professionals trained in cyber security possess the unique ability to protect digital assets and guard intellectual property. In this program, you’ll pursue your career ambitions in one of the world’s fastest-growing technology fields and develop the expertise to safeguard organizations, communities and individuals from digital threats.
Deepen your understanding of essential cyber security knowledge and skills. Our curriculum design focuses on case studies with real-world examples, allowing you to graduate with the skills and confidence to pursue your career ambitions. You can also further enhance your skill set by earning one or two distinct certificates:
Certificate in Cyber Security Fundamentals (5 months, part-time)
This certificate explores the fundamental knowledge required to help you be a more effective IT manager and to more effectively lead project teams. Students who plan to earn the CISSP designation can choose to continue on to the Certificate in Advanced Cyber Security right away or take a break and enrol in a later cohort.
Certificate in Advanced Cyber Security (5 months, part-time)
The Certificate in Advanced Cyber Security builds upon the foundational knowledge gained in the first certificate to develop managerial competencies and a more thorough understanding of the eight knowledge areas required for the CISSP designation.
(Pre-Requisite: successful completion of the first certificate and/or holds the CISSP.)
Cyber Security Bundle – Fundamentals and Advanced Certificates – (10 months, part-time)
Our cyber security program courses are aligned with the eight (8) domains of the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) body of knowledge. Completing both the Fundamentals and Advanced Certificates will prepare you to present the CISSP examination and help you earn your designation. Register in both certificates and save on your program fees with a bundle discount (applied by default in shopping cart).
For those interested in pursuing the CISSP designation, the (ISC)2 has its own requirements regarding application, admission, accreditation and membership. It is the responsibility of the students to familiarize themselves and comply with the CISSP accreditation requirements from the (ISC)2.

“The credential has a lot of credibility in the marketplace. Because York is structuring the program along CISSP knowledge, that positions students to be better prepared”
Ed Dubrovsky – COO, Managing Partner at Cytelligence Inc.
“Given the increasing cyber security challenge Canadian organizations of all types face, with skilled and motivated adversaries attacking our collective defenses, I am excited about the depth of expertise that the York University School of Continuing Studies will be imparting to their students with the delivery of the cyber security certificate program.”
John Weigelt – National Technology Officer, Microsoft Canada
The Certificate in Cyber Security Fundamentals as a stand-alone offer, as well as the bundle of the Certificate in Cyber Security Fundamentals and the Certificate in Advanced Cyber Security taken together are direct registration programs. No application process is required: simply enrol in the session of your choice to get started.
To register directly in the Certificate in Advanced Cyber Security, you must first successfully complete the Certificate in Cyber Security Fundamentals or already hold the CISSP Designation. Direct enrolment into the Advanced Certificate is subject to review and approval by the Program Manager.
Tracey Taylor-O’Reilly – Assistant Vice-President, Continuing Studies
Courses combine in-person learning, on campus at York (or Live Online via Zoom during COVID-19) plus online learning. The live components are typically held at a scheduled day and time (e.g. Saturday and Sunday, 9am-5pm), on campus at York (or Live Online via Zoom during COVID-19), where students and instructors gather to participate in active learning activities, share their learnings in an interactive format and hear from guest speakers. The online delivery or coursework is asynchronous, which means that while students have set deadlines to complete their work each week, they do not have any required “live” components on a daily basis.
Students can expect to write exams/quizzes, prepare assignments (individual and group), and participate in online discussions with their peers. In addition to any live components, students should expect to dedicate approximately 8-10 hours of effort per course each week for readings, discussions boards, practice opportunities, assignments, and so on.
Please view our Live Online video to learn more about this format.
Cyber Security – Short Intensive (12 Weeks)
Complete both the Fundamentals and Advanced certificates in an accelerated, 12-week intensive format.
The Intensive version of the program should be viewed as a full-time commitment and would not be a good fit for those who would be working during the program schedule. We do not recommend the Intensive version of this program to those who work full time or who would have outside competing commitments that would take time away from the program. We also offer a part-time version of the program that would be a better fit for those with additional commitments.
Examine the information security knowledge framework through the lens of the CISSP domains as you develop an enhanced understanding of the eight CISSP domains and gain the fundamental information required for information security projects and the designation.
