Improve your English language and academic skills and achieve an IELTS 6.0. Prepare for Destination York and work towards your goal of gaining admission to York University.

What is Pre-Destination York?

Pre-Destination York is an 8-week program designed to help high school graduates with an IELTS score of 5.5 prepare for the Destination York program and eventually for study at York University. Graduating high school students who are eligible to join Pre-Destination York will be among a select group of high achievers who are motivated to improve their academic English skills.

What you will learn

The Pre-Destination York program focuses on the language skills required to succeed in York undergraduate courses. Your major goal during this program is to achieve an IELTS score of 6.0 to advance to the Destination York program. Guided by our expert instructors, you will improve your English and academic skills, and prepare for the academic expectations an undergraduate student meets.

You will learn how to improve important academic skill areas, such as:

  • Listening to key ideas in lectures and presentations
  • Note-taking
  • Understanding and analyzing academic readings

You will also develop your writing skills to a level required for university-level research papers. More than that, you’ll develop key critical thinking, time management, and teamwork skills that will help you excel in a university environment.

Program Benefits

You won’t just learn the language and academic skills to enter university life, you will also develop your social skills by engaging with your classmates in interactive environments both online and in-person. You will have the opportunity to improve your spoken English with other students in the wider community during online and face-to-face Conversation Partner sessions. As an English Language Institute student you can also join clubs and attend online and in-person York University events to socialize with your friends and experience Canadian culture in a fun and supportive environment.

Pre-Destination York is for high school graduates who want to achieve the language requirements to enter the Destination York Program, and ultimately begin undergraduate studies at York University.

Admission requirements

Previous education:
High school graduation

Language proficiency you need:
IELTS score of 5.5 (or)
TOEFL iBT: 79 or TOEFL paper (or)
Completion of Level AP6

Schedule and Online Delivery
  • The program is 8 weeks in length, with 20 hours per week of online learning.
  • Each day includes 3 hours of live online learning, delivered by one of our expert instructors, and 1 hour of online self-study time for you to work on assignments.

You will need a computer with reliable, high-speed internet and a camera and microphone. An e-mail account, internet library access, and textbooks are included in the tuition fee.

Out-of-class Timetable

The University Life program provides a range of co-curricular activities including:

  • Conversation Partners
  • Virtual campus activities with other members of the York community
  • Online workshops on university life skills, including topics such as time management skills, applying for admission, and testing strategies

Accommodations in homestay and on-campus at York University residence is available.
