What is Cyber Security?

Today’s digital environments are highly complex. They are also an integral part of our daily lives. It’s no surprise then that the demand for cyber security expertise is on the rise across all types of industries. Professionals trained in cyber security possess the unique ability to protect digital assets and guard intellectual property. As one of the world’s fastest-growing technology fields, many experts see the cyber security job market doubling in the next five years—which means there will be a critical need for qualified individuals.

The Cyber Security Program will deepen your understanding of cyber security topics, strengthen your skills as an IT manager or project lead, and kick start your future career. The Cyber Security program also allows you to earn two certificates, each just 6- weeks to get an edge over the competition.

In just two 6-week terms of accelerated study, you will cover all the topics of both the Fundamentals and Advanced Cyber Security Certificates, and have a top-level overview of all eight domains of the CISSP body of knowledge and be prepared to tackle the CISSP exam.

For those interested in pursuing the CISSP designation, the (ISC)2 has its own requirements regarding application, admission, accreditation and membership. It is the responsibility of the students to familiarize themselves and comply with the CISSP accreditation requirements from the (ISC)2.

The Cyber Security Short Intensive is a direct registration program. No application process is required; simply enrol in the session of your choice to get started.

Program Format

Short Intensive

Complete both the Fundamentals and Advanced Certificates in two 6-week cohorts (12 weeks total). The Cyber Security program’s intensive format entails asynchronous online coursework in combination with live-online evening sessions.

Students can expect the following in the live-online evening sessions:

  • Guest speaker panel events/career discussions
  • ISC(2) and the CISSP designation domain overview
  • Case study exercises
  • Group discussions/activities
  • Presentations
  •  Scenario-based problem-solving exercises
  • Hands-on exercises using information security tools

Students can expect the following in the online asynchronous part of the program:

  • Become intimately familiar with the Official (ISC)2 Guide to the CISSP CBK, Fifth Edition
  • Review a trove of rich resource material (articles, websites and videos) focused on contemporary cyber security standards and practices
  • Analyze and debrief a number of contemporary famous cyber breaches with instructors and peers and siphon the lessons learned
  • Participate in a number of problem-solving exercises on realistic cyber security scenarios
  • Participate in penetration testing scenarios
  • Study the OWASP Top Ten Web Application Security Risks
  • Examine cyber security vulnerabilities and brainstorm solutions
  • Debate ethical issues and best practices in cyber security
  • Participate in cryptographic code-breaking exercises
  • Practise answering quiz questions that closely resemble those on the CISSP Exam

Time Commitments for the Cyber Security Short Intensive format:

The Intensive version of the program should be viewed as a full-time commitment and would not be a good fit for those who would be working during the program schedule.

We do not recommend the Intensive version of this program to those who work full time or who would have outside competing commitments that would take time away from the program. We also offer a part-time version of the program that would be a better fit for those with additional commitments.

Examine the information security knowledge framework through the lens of the CISSP domains as you develop an enhanced understanding of the eight CISSP domains and gain the fundamental information required for information security projects and the designation.

CSCY1010 Security Risk Management and Governance

Develop an understanding of the ethical, legal and regulatory issues surrounding cyber security as you learn about security principles, network fundamentals and how to apply these areas to design networks and policies for security and compliance.

CSCY1020 Data, Asset and Identity Protection

The amount of digitized data grows in size and vulnerability every day, requiring specialized attention toward processes, protection, security and authentication. Learn how to mitigate risk and protect ownership by understanding best practices for data gathering, classification, storage, retention and protection

CSCY1030 Engineering for Information Security

Security engineering requires an understanding of security models, secure design principles and the ability to assess a variety of systems for vulnerabilities. Students will learn these fundamental concepts as well as information on selecting controls and countermeasures, and the application of cryptography.

CSCY1040 Cyber Security Operations Management

Effective leadership in the field of information security requires an elevated understanding of security operations concepts and how to apply these in real-world situations. Discover how to apply concepts, from best practices in vendor procurement, through to investigations and preventative measures, resource management, disaster recovery, and business continuity.

CSCY1050 Security Assessment and Testing

The development, evaluation and validation of assessment processes is integral to securing system infrastructure and detecting vulnerabilities. Develop an in-depth understanding of the techniques and industry standards for assessment validation, continuity, analysis, reporting and facilitating audits
