Kanchan Suresh Prachwani recently graduated from the School of Continuing Studies’ Post-Graduate Certificate in CloupOps, ready and excited to see what comes next on her career journey. Kanchan spoke with us about what prompted her to go back to school and why she feels she has the skills and experience to pursue her goal of working as a cloud architect.  

Could you describe your career background before enrolling at the School of Continuing Studies?

During my career, I worked at Thomson Reuters as a Senior QA Engineer, where I gained extensive experience in software testing, automation and project management. My journey in the field of computer engineering equipped me with a strong foundation, and my experiences at Thomson Reuters provided valuable insights into the practical applications of technology in real-world settings.

What inspired you to continue your education?

The opportunity to work with both conventional technologies and futuristic cloud services at Thomson Reuters inspired me to pursue further education in CloudOps. Witnessing the growing demand for cloud services and DevOps practices in the IT industry, I realized the importance of evolving my skill set to meet these demands. Enrolling in the CloudOps program at York University was a natural progression for me, as it offered a comprehensive curriculum tailored to my career aspirations and provided the necessary tools to excel in the rapidly evolving technology landscape.

What drives your passion in your chosen career field?

I am passionate about exploring innovative solutions using cloud services to address complex challenges in the IT industry. The dynamic nature of the technology field, coupled with the endless possibilities offered by cloud computing, fuels my curiosity and drives me to continuously learn and adapt. Working in a collaborative environment with a team of talented individuals at Thomson Reuters further ignites my passion, as we collectively strive to push the boundaries of what’s possible and make a positive impact through our work.

Why did you choose York University’s School of Continuing Studies?

I chose York University’s School of Continuing Studies for its reputable CloudOps specialization course, which aligned perfectly with my career aspirations. The program’s comprehensive curriculum covers fundamental concepts, intermediate topics, and advanced practices in cloud computing, DevSecOps, and operations management. Additionally, York University’s esteemed faculty and resources provided the support and guidance needed to excel in my studies. Overall, the opportunity to learn from industry experts and gain practical skills in cloud technology made York University’s School of Continuing Studies the ideal choice for advancing my career in the IT industry.

How would you describe your experience with the instructors at the School?

My experience with the instructors has been exceptional. Their expertise, guidance, and support have been instrumental in my academic journey. They bring real-world experience into the classroom, enriching our learning with practical insights and industry best practices. Moreover, their approachability and willingness to engage with students foster an environment conducive to learning and growth.

What was it like to collaborate with your peers throughout the program?

Collaborating with my peers throughout the program has been both enlightening and rewarding. The diverse perspectives and experiences brought to the table by my classmates have enriched our discussions and expanded my understanding of the subject matter. Engaging in group projects and collaborative assignments has not only strengthened my teamwork and communication skills but has also fostered a sense of camaraderie and support within the cohort. Together, we have navigated challenges, shared knowledge, and celebrated successes, making the learning experience truly memorable.

Can you share a moment from your time at the School that you are particularly proud of?

One moment from my time at the School that stands out is the successful completion of our capstone project. It was the culmination of months of hard work, collaboration, and application of the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the program. Presenting our project to peers and instructors, and receiving positive feedback was a proud moment for me. It not only showcased our capabilities but also reinforced the value of teamwork and perseverance in achieving our goals.

What are your plans for your career or further education after graduating from your program?

After graduating from the CloudOps program, my immediate plan is to leverage my newfound skills and knowledge to enhance my contributions at Thomson Reuters. I aim to play a pivotal role in the integration of cloud services and DevOps practices within our team, driving efficiency and innovation. Additionally, I aspire to continue my professional development through certifications and continuous learning to stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends.

Looking ahead, what are your long-term career goals, and how do you feel your program has prepared you to achieve them?

My long-term career goal is to become a proficient cloud architect, contributing to the design and implementation of scalable and resilient cloud solutions. The CloudOps program at York University has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of cloud technologies, DevSecOps practices, and operations management, laying a solid foundation for my career aspirations. Moreover, the hands-on projects, industry-relevant curriculum, and collaboration with peers have honed my skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork – all essential qualities for success in the field. I am confident that the program has prepared me well to achieve my long-term career goals and make meaningful contributions to the industry.
