YUBridge Program

This is not new to us, as our English Language Institute has launched and delivered many quality online programs over the years, and we will continue to maintain the highest quality of instruction for those considering starting their studies with us. Get started on your degree while you improve your English to meet the York University entry requirements!

 

Students accepted into the YUBridge program receive a conditional offer of acceptance to York University. This program combines 25 hours per week of instruction which includes Academic English classes, language support, tutorials and lectures with for-credit courses in Liberal Arts, Science, Health, Lassonde School of Engineering, and School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design. In 8 months, you’ll be speaking and writing at an IELTS 6.5 level — the minimum requirement for full admission to York University.

Earn credits as you learn English

While improving your IELTS level, you will also take one 3-credit course in the first term. Upon successful completion of the language requirements in Term 1, you may be eligible to enrol in one or two 3-credit courses in your second semester, meaning that you could earn 9 credits of your undergraduate degree by the end of this program.

Once you start in the YUBridge program, you are considered an undergraduate student at York. You will take the same courses as fully admitted York students, helping to build relationships with the students and staff in your Faculty.

Your tutorial leaders are chosen specifically for their experience working with international students, and academic tutorials are taught separately, so class sizes remain small. This structure also enables the English language course content to be tailored to the undergraduate area you’re studying, making YUBridge classroom activities highly relevant to your future studies.

Online Delivery [4]

The YUBridge program is an 8-month, 2-term online pathway to York University. Students accepted into the YUBridge program are conditionally admitted to one of the six faculties at York University: Health, Science, Liberal Arts, Lassonde School of Engineering and School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design. English language training is a weekly mix of 15 hours live instruction and 5 hours of additional online activities. Additionally, YUB students complete one 3-credit course in Term I and up to two 3-credit courses in Term II. They are also supported by an additional 2-hour per week live tutorial taught by teaching assistants selected specifically for their specialization.

Our 15-hour per week synchronous EAP and ESP classes are delivered through Zoom and taught by our highly professional and experienced YUELI instructors. EAP focuses on providing you with the language tools needed in all four skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking. The ESP is tailored specifically to cover the language components needed for your credit courses at York University.

The additional 5-hours per week of independent learning through our online, asynchronous university skill module is designed to focus exclusively on the skills and strategies needed to navigate the academic culture in a university setting. This includes self-study modules on notetaking, annotation, textual analysis, critical thinking, editing, writing structure as well as listening and reading strategies.

Materials

An e-mail account, internet and library access, textbooks and limited printing and photocopying services are included in the tuition fee. YUBridge students will be expected to purchase textbooks for each of their academic credit courses.

      • 16 hours of in class English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instruction per week over 4 months per term
      • 4 hours of blended English for Specific Purposes (ESP) per week focused on your field of study (2 hours in-class and 2 hours online)
      • Up to three 3-credit courses over the 2 terms (3 hours per week)
      • 2 hours of academic tutorials on the subject matters of the credit courses

Admission requirements [10]

Term 1 (8 months)

      • Previous education: 80% GPA (or equivalent) from high school
      • Language proficiency:
        -IELTS: 5.0 overall, with a minimum of 5.0 in Writing OR
        -DET (Duolingo English Test): 80 OR
        -Successful completion of Academic Program Level AP5 [11] OR
        -Equivalent score on YUELI placement test

Term 2 (4 months)

      • Previous education: 80% GPA (or equivalent) from high school
      • Language proficiency:
        -IELTS: 6.0
        -DET (Duolingo English Test): 100 OR
        -Successful completion of Academic Program Level AP7 [11] OR
        -Equivalent score on YUELI placement test

Accommodation [12]

Social & Cultural Activities [14]

These activities [15] allow students to socialize with other participants in the course, attend cultural events, and visit places of interest in and around Toronto.
A visit to the CN Tower, Niagara Falls, an NBA game, a Soccer Club, and a Games Club are examples of s the many trips, clubs, and activities available to English Language students.
