Certificate in Family Mediation

Help your clients make choices that can change their lives for the better

The Certificate in Family Mediation gives you the skills and experience you need to mediate conflict, affect positive change in the lives of children and adults, and help families enduring difficult times move forward collaboratively. As a confident and experienced family mediator, you’ll be helping families resolve conflict in a practical, safe, and positive manner, rather than the costly and adversarial alternative of litigation.

This program also fulfills the training requirements for the Accredited Family Mediator (AccFM) designation with the Ontario Association for Family Mediation—the largest accreditor of Ontario family mediators.

Join Ontario’s only university-level family mediation program

The Certificate in Family Mediation prepares you to work closely with families in conflict to help them work through disputes and identify fair and reasonable solutions. To ensure you have the skills and knowledge to facilitate the best possible outcomes for families, you’ll learn firsthand from certified and practicing industry expert instructors and coaches who regularly deal with the types of challenging situations that result from family disputes. Your instructors will guide you through dynamic experiential education opportunities, including role-playing sessions, which will allow you to develop your mediation skills and competencies, improving your confidence as a new practitioner.

Upon graduating from York’s program, you will have the practical experience, emotional intelligence, and expertise to help guide families through conflict safely and, respectfully, reduce their emotional stress, ensure an equal voice to all parties, and help form lasting agreements.

 Earning A Family Mediation Designation

Family Mediation is an unregulated field, meaning that you do not have to pursue a designation as an Accredited Family Mediator in order to practice. However, if you choose to pursue this designation, York University School of Continuing Studies is an OAFM-approved training provider and the Family Mediation certificate meets the training requirements for certification with OAFM – the largest accrediting body for Family Mediators in Ontario.

To achieve the AccFM designation, you will need to meet the following additional requirements stipulated by OAFM:

  • Completion of required family mediation training requirements from an OAFM-approved training provider (York’s Certificate in Family Mediation fulfills the training requirements for this program).
  • Fulfillment of the education requirements, which include completion of a degree or diploma; or proof of Family Mediation Canada certification; or a minimum of six (6) years of relevant work experience.
  • Verification of professional experience in counselling, the legal field, psychology, social work, financial professionals, social services, teaching or nursing. Applicants who work with individuals or organizations in conflict or facilitating discussions between individuals or organizations who have adverse interests will be considered.
  • Completion of an Internship which consists of 100 hours of hands-on mediation work experience supervised by an OAFM-Accredited Family Mediator, as well as the completion of five (5) agreements to mediate and five (5) final mediation reports.
York University’s Family Mediation Certificate will set you up for success in finding a placement by providing you with grades from skills-based assessment and evaluation, so you can provide tangible proof of your abilities to potential internship providers.

For those interested in pursuing the AccFM designation, please be advised that it is the students’ responsibility to review and fulfill OAFM’s accreditation requirements in full. More information can be found on the OAFM website. Should you have questions about any part of this process, please contact the OAFM at 1-844-989-3026 or admin@oafm.on.ca
