We are thrilled to celebrate Gayathri Rajamohan, an inspiring graduate of our Post-Graduate Certificate in Cybersecurity, who has been nominated for the globally recognized PIEoneer Award in the category of International Alum of the Year

Gayathri is the only nominee from a Canadian university in this category, standing proudly among a distinguished group of international alumni. Her nomination is a powerful testament to her extraordinary journey—from international student to cybersecurity professional, mentor, and changemaker.

About the PIEoneer Awards

The PIEoneer Awards honour innovation and excellence in global education. The International Alum of the Year category celebrates an outstanding international graduate who has made a meaningful impact both at their institution and in the wider community.

From Student to Cybersecurity Leader

Gayathri’s journey began in India, where she earned her undergraduate degree before moving to Canada to pursue her passion for cybersecurity. After completing her post-graduate certificate at York University’s School of Continuing Studies, she launched her career as a full-time SOC Analyst.

But her contributions did not stop there.

She returned to the classroom—this time as a teaching assistant—to support and inspire students in the very program she once attended. In June, she was honoured as the keynote speaker at both School of Continuing Studies graduation ceremonies, a role that reflects her leadership and influence.

Championing Women in Cybersecurity

Gayathri is deeply committed to mentorship and community engagement. She volunteers with her alma mater in India, the Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science, mentoring undergraduate women pursuing STEM careers. She also supports organizations like Leading Ladies in Cyber and Women in Cyber Security, helping to build a more inclusive future for the field.

With women representing just 22% of the cybersecurity workforce in Canada and the U.S. (according to a recent ISC2 survey), Gayathri’s work is helping to close the gender gap and open doors for others.

A Voice of Empowerment

Reflecting on her journey, Gayathri shares:

“I learned that I am capable of advocating for myself and others, of living independently and putting myself out there in a group.”

She also highlights the supportive learning environment at York:

“The teaching method in Canada is so different from India. The teachers are approachable and encourage you to meet with them and ask questions. The classroom and project work are very interactive and encourage you to connect with other students.”

This spirit of generosity and connection inspired her to become a mentor and role model for aspiring cybersecurity professionals—especially women and international students.

Recognized by Her Mentors

Cybersecurity Program Manager Marina DeBona recalls:

“I first met Gayathri as a student in the Cyber Operations program, and right from the start, she stood out—not just for her academic excellence, but for her professionalism, curiosity, and dedication.

When a teaching assistant opportunity came up, she immediately came to mind. Every instructor I spoke to recommended her without hesitation. She’s been doing an exceptional job ever since. Gayathri exemplifies what the PIEoneer Award stands for—passion, initiative and excellence.”

Looking Ahead

Gayathri’s long-term goal? To become a Chief Information Security Officer at a major corporation. But no matter where her career takes her, she remains committed to mentoring and uplifting others:

“I enjoyed so much support from the industry instructors at York. I want to pass that along to others, especially international students who are finding their way in a new country.”

Join Us in Celebrating

Gayathri will attend the PIEoneer Awards ceremony in London, England, on Friday, September 5, 2025, accompanied by Christine Brooks-Cappadocia, the Assistant Vice-President of Continuing Studies at York.

We’re incredibly proud of Gayathri on this major accomplishment and wish her the very best of luck at the awards!
