Develop your English language skills to fulfill the York University IELTS 6.5 language requirement and pursue your studies in one of the top universities in Canada.

What is Destination York?

The Destination York Program is an accelerated English for Academic Purpose program that offers conditional acceptance to more than 100 York University undergraduate programs. This eight-week Academic English Language Program is available to students with conditional admission to an undergraduate degree program at York University.

You can enrol in this program after applying to a degree program at York. After successfully completing the Destination York program, you will have fulfilled the York University IELTS 6.5 language requirement for most York undergraduate programs with no test required (IELTS or TOEFL). You will be set up for success to pursue your academic goals at one of the top universities in Canada.

What you will learn

Taught by our highly qualified, caring instructors, you will receive customized feedback to improve your language skills in essential academic areas, such as:

  • Listening to key ideas in lectures and presentations, note-taking, and analyzing academic readings.
  • Developing the skills needed to write university-level academic research papers with confidence.
  • Thinking critically, managing time and working effectively in a team

You will learn in small online class sizes, allowing you to collaborate with your classmates and develop skills for success in your academic studies.

English Language Institute students can join clubs and attend online and in-person York University events to socialize with your friends and experience Canadian culture in a fun and supportive environment.

Program length: 8 weeks
Online class size: Maximum 18 students
Online class hours/week: 30 hours per week
Start dates: 3 start times per year, timed to finish before undergraduate terms begin (March, July, November)

Who should take this program?

Destination York is designed to help high school graduates with an IELTS score of 6.0 prepare for study at York University. This program is for students who want to achieve an IELTS score of 6.5 to fulfil the York University language requirement for admission to most undergraduate programs. Graduating high school students who are eligible to join Destination York will be among a select group of high achievers who are motivated to improve their academic English skills.

Online Delivery

You will participate in 30 hours per week of online learning. Daily sessions include:

  • 4.5 hours of face-to-face online learning delivered by two expert instructors
  • 1.5 hours of online self-study time to work on assignments
Materials

You will need a computer with reliable, high-speed internet and a camera and microphone. An e-mail account, internet library access, and textbooks are included in the tuition fee.

Schedule
  • 8 week program
  • 30 hours of class per week
  • 6 hours of class per day*
  • Class time is split between advanced-level speaking, listening, reading and writing activities and content-based modules (academic discussion topics, readings and debates)

*In most cases, English Language Institute classes run according to the schedule noted. However, based on program requirements and increased student registrations, some program schedules may shift to evenings (4:50 PM – 8:50 PM) and Saturdays.

Out-of-class Timetable

The University Life program provides a range of co-curricular activities including:

  • Conversation Partners
  • Virtual campus activities with other members of the York community
  • Online workshops on university life skills, including topics such as time management skills, applying for admission, and testing strategies
